In some parts of Creuse you could be forgiven for thinking you were actually in the Cotswolds, such is the beauty of its rolling hills and lush pastureland. Of course, there are some key differences. The Cotswolds buzz with tourists from all over the world and are home to a string of A-list celebrities whereas Creuse is an unassuming department with many more cows than people. A house in the Cotswolds will set you back an average of £385,000. With that kind of money you could buy at least six houses in Creuse where the average house price is just €68,000, equivalent to £59,000. Take this attractive stone property. It’s actually two dwellings – a four-bedroom, two-bathroom house and an attached workshop recently converted into a twobedroom home. It has a cellar, a garage, a wood store and a decent-sized garden of 1,329m2 and is set on a quiet road with no passing traffic as such, yet within walking distance of a village with shops, a bar and restaurant. The price? Just €145,000. Ray Metcalfe, the local Beaux Villages agent, is impressed. “The workshop was converted into a two-bedroom house four years ago by artisans and has been lived in for the last three years by the owners,” he says. “It is like a brand new property inside, insulated and with new electrics and some of the original character left. The larger property lends itself to setting up a B&B as there are no other B&Bs in the village.”

Calm but connected
A few minutes’ drive away is Marsac, a larger village with a train station, mini-market, hairdresser’s, baker’s, chemist, bar, two restaurants and an outdoor pool. Within half an hour’s drive are the larger towns of Souterraine (famous for its medieval tower), the Creuse capital Guéret and Bourganeuf, beyond which is Lac de Vassivière, a large reservoir with beaches, safe swimming areas, watersports, free taxi boat and bar-restaurants. Limoges airport is less than an hour away. “People come to Creuse to get away from it all,” says Helen Reeve, who runs the Chez Helen chambres-d’hôtes not far from Marsac. “It’s a tranquil, calm, rural place where you can enjoy the birdsong. The winters are long and cold but once spring arrives it’s lovely and warm. It’s just a great place.”
