New McLaren 600LT
McLaren has created its most performance focused Sports Series model yet as a final hurrah for the current generation before it is replaced in 2020. The 600LT is lighter than the 570S but gets more power and better aerodynamics. It is the fourth McLaren to take the Longtail name, following the F1 GTR Longtail race car, 675LT Coupé and 675LT Spider. The 600LT will make its public debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. It is described by McLaren as the “fastest, most powerful and most track-focused – yet roadlegal – Sports Series” model. It is powered by McLaren’s twin-turbocharged 3.8-litre V8 engine, which has an uprated cooling system and reduced back pressure in an exhaust system that is “even shorter and more extreme than that of the McLaren Senna”, according to the Woking-based maker. Peak power is 600PS (592bhp), hence the 600LT name, and maximum torque is 457lb ft. Those represent increases of 30bhp and 14lb ft over the 570S Coupé. It is 96kg lighter than the 570S Coupé, with a lightest dry weight of 1247kg when all weight-saving options are fitted. Nearly a quarter of the parts (23%) have been changed from those in the 570S. At its lightest dry weight, the 600LT has 475bhp per tonne. Performance figures have yet to be released but expect its top speed to exceed 204mph and a 0-62mph time that’s quicker than the 3.2sec of the 570S. For comparison with its rivals, the Porsche 911 GT2 RS achieves 0-62mph in 2.8sec and the Lamborghini Huracán Performante in 2.9sec. Staying true to the Longtail name, the 600LT has a longer body than other Sports Series models. Its 74mm increase takes the overall length to 4604mm. New carbonfibre bodywork includes the front splitter, side sills, extended diffuser and fixed rear wing, all of which help reduce weight and improve the aerodynamics. Top-exit exhausts are another major aesthetic and engineering difference. They deliver “substantial” weight savings while creating a more raucous sound. McLaren said the exhausts are “mounted virtually behind the driver’s shoulder to bring the incredible sound of the powertrain into the cabin”.
remit of the 600LT is “to engage and excite drivers to the highest levels imaginable”. To help achieve this, the model uses the forged aluminium double-wishbone suspension and lightweight braking system from the 720S and bespoke track-focused Pirelli Trofeo R tyres. McLaren also said there is quicker steering, sharpened responses from the throttle and brake pedals, and firmer engine mounts. The cabin features extensive use of lightweight Alcantara and carbonfibre race seats first seen on the P1. Optional superlightweight carbonfibre seats developed for the McLaren Senna are also available. Other lightweight options include a carbonfibre roof and vented carbonfibre front wings. McLaren has yet to confirm production numbers, stating only that it will be “strictly limited”. Output is expected to be similar to that for the 675LT Coupé, of which only 500 were made. The 600LT will be built at McLaren’s facility in Woking. Production will begin in October and last no more than 12 months. A Spider version is also expected, following the pattern set by the 675LT. Pricing is from £185,500, which includes a track-day experience with driver training. McLaren boss Mike Flewitt said: “The McLaren F1 GTR Longtail was one of the purest race cars in modern motorsport history. The 675LT resurrected the revered name, creating the purest distillation of the sheer driving pleasure embodied by all McLaren cars. “Now, we are further extending our very special LT family – albeit in limited numbers – and once again showcasing the ethos of optimised aerodynamics, increased power, reduced weight, track-focused dynamics and enhanced driver engagement that are hallmarks of a McLaren Longtail.”
