7 of the best of Furnishing in 2018
7 of the best of Furnishing in 2018. Awe-inspiring architecture is a fine start, but home is what you want to touch and feel. This year’s best furnishings make us true creatures of comfort – and good taste. by Arianne Nardo
Kitchen confidential
We trust the Italians in the kitchen. Boffi (boffi.com) reinforces that faith with Cove, a sculptural kitchen suite created in collaboration with Zaha Hadid Design. The late architect’s signature imprimatur – here, a swoosh of white Corian – reigns, while the culinary essentials (like the sink, stove top and drawers) go incognito, incorporated seamlessly into one chic island. From around $105,000.
Getting stoned
Last year when designer Greg Natale created a collection of glass mosaic tiles for Bisazza (bisazza. it), it was like a cool substitute teacher had stepped into the room. New Malachite delivered supersonic graphic verve and permission to use it at will.
CC-Tapis in Milan (cc-tapis.com) is the Quincy Jones of rug-making, specialising in soulful, boundary- pushing hits, all hand-knotted in Nepal. The Rotazioni B was designed by Patricia Urquiola and pulses with pop-art dimension and geometric swing. Consider the mic dropped.
Salvatore Ferragamo’s stacked heel might have given it style bona fides, but that tiered look has been a constant in Italian architecture. Stéphane Parmentier riffed off the motif in his Scala series for Giobagnara (giobagnara.com), where exquisitely handcrafted layers of leather and wood offer sensuality and utility – something fashion doesn’t usually claim (from $2700).
For furniture brands, chairs are complex propositions. Good ones never fade; mediocre ones never sell. Ligne Roset’s (ligne-roset.com) Paipaï is an original: a contoured, origami-inspired love seat (also available as a sofa) with a black steel frame and very visible hardware. Created by studio LucidiPevere, this one wins the popular vote (from $4200).
Hermès (hermes. com) has been here before. This time, it’s for the tabletop – a category that balances duty with élan. The French house has introduced its porcelain H Deco service in a rich Bordeaux-hued rouge, and it’s like a Parisian reverie for aspiring well-dressed tables ($120-$2065).
Achille Castiglioni, the beloved 20th-century design titan, created the Dry cutlery set for Alessi in 1984 (alessi.com). That gorgeously unfussy series was a sensation. To commemorate what would have been Castiglioni’s 100th birthday, the company has unveiled a scintillating 24-piece Dry set in a special copper PVD finish ($732 for a set of six).
